GORDON Strachan has reluctantly agreed to sell Stephen Pearson this January for £1million after a meeting with the Celtic midfielder and his agent last week.

The Scotland international may now be heading to the English Championship and his former Motherwell manager Billy Davies at Derby County, despite strong competition from Roy Keane at Sunderland.

No coz . Takze niech rusza zawojaowac Championship.

Celtic's Paul Telfer has announced plans to leave the Glasgow club when his contract expires in 2007.

The 35-year-old full-back has also said he may quit football entirely if he is unable to find a club closer to home.

Telfer is currently in his second season at Celtic but would prefer a move nearer his family in Winchester.

The former Coventry and Southampton player said: "My contract is up and, even if there was an offer of another year, I won't be staying."

Telfer signed for Celtic in July 2005 and made his first appearance for the club in a Champions League qualifier when Gordon Strachan's new charges lost 5-0 to Artmedia Petrzalka in Slovakia.

Despite a slow start to his career in Glasgow, Telfer has managed to hold down a regular slot in Strachan's starting 11, picking up a League Cup winner's medal and a league winner's medal last season.

"I feel fit enough to play on," added Telfer. "But my family couldn't settle and are already back down south. So, if a club came in, I'd look at that.

"All the talk is about Shaun Maloney and Aiden McGeady, but I can also leave on a Bosman at the end of the season. I might slip away.

"Seriously, I will leave because it's not ideal being away from my family and I went a month without seeing my son.

"He has just started school so doesn't really appreciate what his dad has up in Scotland.

"He's more interested in Scooby Doo than football.

"If I stop playing, I'm not sure what I'll do - but not coaching."

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has met freed Hearts captain Steven Pressley in Glasgow about a possible January move to the Scottish champions.

A club source told BBC Sport: "It's too early to say they are in talks. Steven simply had a natter with Gordon, whom he knows from his time at Coventry."

Pressley plans talks with other clubs in the coming week.

It is understood there has so far been no contact from Southampton or Derby County for the Scotland defender.

The English clubs were among the first to be linked with the 33-year-old following his acrimonious departure from Tynecastle.

But, with Pressley's wife expecting a new child within the week, he will take his time to make a decision about whether to remain in Scotland or move to England.

Southampton manager George Burley told BBC Sport: "I'm aware of Steven Pressley's situation and I'm monitoring it.

"But I would have to wait and see if we could do anything in the January transfer window."

Despite leaving Hearts at the weekend, Pressley is ineligible to sign for another employer until the opening of the transfer window.

Pressley's last game for Hearts was the goalless draw way to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in November.

The Scotland international joined Hearts in 1998 but recently fell out of favour after voicing concern about the way the club was being run by majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov.

606 DEBATE: Will Pressley will be tempted by the Saints manager?

Rangers were thought to head the queue for the services of Pressley, who has been capped 27 times by Scotland and began his career at Ibrox.

Dundee United, Dunfermline, Leeds and Cardiff have also been linked with the centre-half.

Sheffield United, Reading and Watford are among the Premiership clubs said to be keen, but Pressley could be interested in joining up with his former boss at Hearts.

Burley has a record of attracting players who previously played under him.

Former Hearts midfielder Rudi Skacel, Spurs striker Grzegorz Rasiak and ex-Derby playmaker Inigo Idiakez joined forces with their previous boss in preference to Premiership clubs

Celtic have won the race to sign Scotland defender Steven Pressley.

The former Hearts captain, 33, who had also undergone a medical at Charlton, will be unveiled by the Scottish champions later on Friday.

Pressley's agent, Blair Morgan, told BBC Sport: "It was a really, really difficult decision.

"He had two fantastic offers from two good clubs. Charlton were really brilliant, but the lure of European football next season won the day."

Pressley had held talks with new Charlton manager Alan Pardew on Thursday.

But Celtic's need for defensive cover had become more pressing with this week's confirmation that Bobo Balde had suffered a broken leg.

And it was Gordon Strachan who won the signature of a player who had also been linked with Southampton, Derby and Leeds.

What I like about him is he is a leader

Charlton manager Alan Pardew

"Charlton are nice people and a good team who I think will get themselves clear of their present relegation trouble," added Morgan.

Scotland international Pressley is a free agent after coming to an agreement to leave Hearts earlier this month following his criticism of majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov.

Pressley also claimed there was "dressing-room unrest" at the Scottish Premier League club.

Pardew, who replaced Les Reed as manager of Charlton on Christmas Eve, had thought there was a "good chance" he could win Pressley's signature but realised there was severe competition.

"What I like about him is he is a leader," the Charlton manager had said.

"I think we have got some very good centre-halves here, but he comes into a pack where we need characters and leadership and that is one thing that attracts me to him."

Pressley is ineligible to play for his new employer before the opening of the transfer window in January.

He is also ineligible for Celtic's Champions League campaign this term, having been cup-tied with Hearts.
